You’re most likely familiar with X-rays, but have you already heard of cephalometric x-rays? A cephalometric or CEPH x-ray is a valuable tool here in our practice at Image Dental.
If you’re planning on getting orthodontic treatment, your dentist may also recommend getting a CEPH X-ray.
In this post, we talk about CEPH X-rays - what they’re for, how they work, and how they help you and your dentist.
A cephalometric x-ray captures a side view image of your head. It shows your teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures. It’s an extraoral procedure as it doesn’t involve inserting a film into the amount. It also doesn’t require you to bite down on any device.
Like other forms of x rays, the image appears on film as black, white, and gray. This is due to the bone and tissue that block the x ray’s path.
The image is then explained by a specially-trained professional and is used by your dental team to understand your condition better and plan your orthodontic treatment.
Your x-ray technician positions your head between the mechanical rotating arm and the film holder. Once you’re all set, the arm rotates around your head to capture images of your face.
It’s important to position the body properly as this can affect the clarity of the image results.
The exposure is completed within seconds while developing the film can be done in less than 10 minutes. Images can be magnified to better show any signs of issue.
Your dentist then examines the X-ray to check the location and position of your jaw and surrounding structure, and how orthodontic treatment can affect them. This serves as their guide in recommending the next course of action for your oral health concerns.
CEPH Xrays may be used for the following:
It’s natural to feel a bit uneasy when you hear the word radiation.
But there’s no need to worry as dental x-rays are safe. The amount of radiation required is very low, which also means that the risk of any potentially harmful effects is very little too.
We also recommend getting dental x-rays only when it’s necessary.
Taking CEPH X-rays is quick, easy, and painless, and offers numerous benefits for both you and your dentist.
